10:10 - 11:10 Invited talk: Data Mining Meets Football
Ulf Brefeld
Football is the predominant sports in the world with about 3.3–3.5 billion fans all around the globe. To serve all kinds of information needs and to provide exhaustive media coverages, data plays an increasing role in football. Perhaps the most challenging data that is being recorded on large-scales in many leagues are trajectory data of the players. Today, the resource is mainly used to summarise matches into descriptive statistics such as heat maps of whereabouts of the players; hence, the full potential of the data is yet to be exploited. By contrast, football clubs have a need for intelligent data processing techniques to answer complex questions. This includes data-driven analyses of the tactics of the opponent teams and also leverages to use-cases such as serious games and scouting players. In this talk, I will introduce trajectory data and point out inherent problems that need to be addressed before learning and mining approaches may be applied. I will show empirical results for exemplary problem settings including the efficient retrieval of similar scenes and analysing game strategies.
