When is the News Week?

Appeared in Volume 8/3, August 1995

The November 29, 1993 issue of Newsweek contains an interesting article entitled "Doin' What Doesn't Come Naturally," and subtitled "Is the brain not built to do physics?" The article suggests that "abstract logic escapes all but a select few," and goes on to suggest that "few students, or adults for that matter, master two other aspects of formal thought - noncontradiction and impossibility." "Without them," the article says, "you cannot solve the long-lost-sister puzzle."

Here's the long-lost-sister puzzle as stated in Newsweek:

"I am your long-lost sister," says Amy to the man, who indeed has one (but only one) missing sibling. "She's lying - I'M your long-lost sister," Barbara insists at the family reunion. "At least two of us always lie," smirks a third woman, Carol.

Which one is the man's sister?
