Abstract
The goal of this project is to develop the next-generation screening and analysis tool for cell biologists by purposefully elaborating and combining expertise in cell biology, micro- and nanofluidics, nanobiotechnology, time-lapse microscopy, image analysis and data mining. More specifically, within this proposal we will: 1) Design customized microfluidic devices in which pro- and eukaryotic cells can be controlled and recorded by time-lapse microscopy; 2) Develop algorithms for comprehensive image analysis to extract meaningful dynamic features from cells and store them in a symbolic format; 3) Develop novel database querying and mining tools that allow adequately correlating and interrogating the dynamic and interrelated data in this database. This novel and multidisciplinary platform will provide a wholesome way of interrogating dynamic cell biology in high-throughput, and will open up entirely new venues for both fundamental research and diagnostic assays.
